Ash Wednesday Lunch

Last week I was telling D how we have almost made it through this dreary November to almost-March cold and flu season without any of us getting sick. I was feeling smug about R's healthy, organic lunches and their germ-fighting properties. The very next day, she got a bad cold. She missed Monday and Tuesday of school this week. Before that, there were a few days when I didn't take lunch photos.

Today she is back at school, and I am back with the photos.

Her school asks everyone to bring a meatless lunch on Ash Wednesday, and all the Fridays in Lent. They actually have "silent lunches" on those days, in honor of people in the world who don't have enough to eat. I wonder how they pull that off. When she came home from school today, she said that kids were good about not talking, and they played music during lunch. She also brought home the collapsible cardboard "Operation Rice Bowl" box, where you eat rice for dinner certain days during Lent and put the money you saved in the bowl to give to poor people around the world. It was such a flashback for D and me. We hadn't seen those since we were in Catholic gradeschool ourselves. They still look pretty much the same.

And here are some pictures from last week, just before she got sick. She asked Santa for a veterinarian kit for Christmas, and she plays with it every day.

I miss her little face when she's at school.
