Meatless Friday Bento

We got an email this morning from the principal that R's school has its first case of H1N1. We'll see how that plays out--it makes me nervous. More Vitamin C in the bentos! I'm sure that will solve everything.

Flower Bento

And then here is what I've been avoiding all day.

The forecast said possible freeze last night and snow this morning, so we brought in every tomato that was almost ripe. Then of course it didn't freeze or snow. There is a lot of canning to do. And this is after giving a lot of tomatoes away this week. Yesterday I canned the sixteen pints of peaches that are on the fireplace, and the no-sugar Cinnamon Peach Pineapple preserves and the Cinnamon Peach with Pinot Noir preserves next to them. (The peach with Pinot Noir is from Christine Ferber's amazing book Mes Confitures.) I just can't face the big kettles again today, but the tomatoes won't wait much longer than tomorrow. The really big green ones are supposed to be green, they're Aunt Ruby German Greens.

Bento for a rainy day

I had to take these pictures inside before school this morning with the exposure cranked up, since it's cold (44 degrees) and rainy. Because I'm not a very good photographer, that gives me the choice of washed-out or shadowy. I went with washed-out.

And there is a cheese stick and the last of the organic Colorado Palisade peaches. Her lunches are not as compact and bento-clever as I would like them to be. Everything goes into an insulated lunchbox with compartments, and ice packs are tucked in everywhere. Safety over cuteness.

Tableau with Sweet Potato

I find these little scenarios all over the house, because I have been really bad at training R to pick up her toys and put them away. This one is a fairy sitting at a table eating a roast chicken, and one of the dehydrated sweet potatoes I make for treats for Charlie.
