Meyer Lemon Marmalade, and Walking in the Snow

My neighbor friend Julie and I have started walking in the mornings, down the Highline Canal near our houses. It's tough slogging through the snow, and my muscles are complaining. But I'm so glad to have a walking partner to get me out the door every morning, and we are lucky to have a beautiful place to walk. This morning we passed this barn.

Then this morning I finished the Meyer lemon marmalade. Just when you are craving bright citrus in the dead of winter, blood oranges and Meyer lemons and pomelos start showing up in the grocery stores.

Two and a half pounds of Meyer lemons, cut in slices and soaked in water overnight to soften the peels

Seeds and trimmings in a jelly bag, to boil with the marmalade and add more pectin

Cooked down with sugar (R calls this "the bubbly brew," which sounds familiar from one of her books, but I can't remember which one)

Jars sterlizing in boiling water

Funnel and lid-lifter and jar-lifter all ready to go

And now we have six jars of tart, golden, bitter, sweet and sunny.
