Front Yard Vegetable Garden Update
The front yard vegetable garden has been in suspended animation for most of June. The weather is so cool and damp, and the warm weather vegetables just sit there. Not dying, but not thriving. This past week we are finally getting some days into the 80s, and they are starting to take off. Now you can see through the fence slats that there is a garden there.
My brother grows the most beautiful, gigantic broccoli in San Diego. I know mine will never look like that, but I wanted to try growing some.
Collard greens, with spinach/mustard flowering and going to seed in front. The pink ribbon in the background is tied to the wire fence, so we remember it's there and don't trip over it and bring the whole fence down. I snaked black soaker hoses up and down the rows to conserve water and deliver it right to the roots. We'll see how that works. The hoses certainly don't stay covered with mulch for very long.
The lemon cucumbers have finally started to grow and set blossoms. They sat there chilled and miserable for over a month.
Something is really eating the Japanese eggplant leaves. I will have to spray them with soap and cayenne pepper and see if that stops it. But it's still setting beautiful purple blossoms.
The tomatoes are happier now too, with the heat. They are interplanted with marigolds and basil, because that always seems to work to keep pests away and improve the flavor.
Baby mesclun is happy next to the soaker hose.
